HIGH TEMPERATURE CENTRIFUGAL FANS

Wide range of flow volumes and static pressures

Centrifugal fans discharge air at right angles to the axis of rotation. For discharge in-line with the axis of the fan wheel & shaft, see high temperature axial fans. Forward curved multiblade, radial blade, and backward inclined are common centrifugal fan wheel designs.

Centrifugal fans are often paired with highly engineered housings to maximize fan performance. These housings can be insulated, uninsulated, single-discharge, double-discharge, include integrated diffusers, and more – connect with our engineering team today to identify the ideal unit for your application.

IGE offers high temperature centrifugal fans in a variety of configurations delivering 100 CFM to >250,000 CFM with static pressures up to 32” w.c. and maximum operating temperatures of 2200°F (1200°C).

IGE’s centrifugal fans are commonly used in the aluminum, steel, and commercial heat treating industries. Common applications include annealing, normalizing, tempering, and nitriding

High temperature forward curved multiblade fans

Forward Curved Multiblade fans, also referred to as “Squirrel Cage” fans, are usually specified for large flow volumes against low to medium static pressures. There are other multiblade styles, including backward inclined, but IGE typically recommends forward curved blades as they deliver the same volume of air, at reduced RPM, compared to other styles & configurations. The reduced RPM is important as this yields lower stresses in the wheel allowing higher temperatures to be used for the air volume specified.

IGE’s high temperature forward curved multiblade fans have been developed and refined over more than a century. They are suitable for continuous heavy-duty applications at temperatures up to 1780°F (970°C) and are offered in various configurations including insulated housing fans and cartridges. IGE offers standard designs from 100 CFM to >250,000 CFM with typical static pressures up to 16” w.c. and specialty designs that can deliver higher pressures if desired.

High temperature radial blade fans

Radial Blade fans, also known as paddle wheel fans, are usually specified for medium flow volumes against medium to high static pressures, especially in applications with material or dust in the airstream. Due to its rugged construction and structural integrity, it is suitable for continuous heavy duty applications involving temperatures up to 2200°F (1200°C). IGE offers standard designs from 100 CFM to 45,000 CFM with 20” w.c. static pressure on standard units and specialized construction to deliver up to 34” w.c. static pressure.

Since introducing the industry standard PW-35, the king of carburizing, in the 1950s, IGE has continually refined its designs, setting new standards for reliability and shaft sealing, and introducing reversible designs.

IGE’s radial blade fans are commonly used in the commercial heat treating, steel, and automotive & commercial transportation industries. Common applications include carburizing, nitriding, and tempering.

High temperature backward inclined fans

Backward Inclined or “BI” fans are usually specified for medium flow volumes against low to medium static pressures. The wheel’s blades are flat and lean away from the direction of the wheel’s rotation. To move a given amount of air the backward inclined fan is of a non-overloading design and is suitable for systems with fluctuating system resistance. This type of fan runs at a relatively high speed and is more efficient than the forward curved multiblade or radial blade fan. The higher operating speed comes with maximum temperature tradeoffs: IGE only recommends backward inclined wheels for operation up to 1350°F (730°C). For higher temperature operation, please see forward curved multiblade fans or radial blade fans.

IGE offers backward inclined fan units from 850 CFM to 45,280 CFM with pressures up to 8” w.c. with standard construction. Higher pressures are available with specialty construction. IGE’s backward incline fan units are available in three temperature ratings.

High Temperature Fan & Blower FAQs

Your most common questions, answered by the experts at IGE Fans.

What qualifies as a high temperature fan or blower?

High temperature fans and blowers are engineered to handle elevated operating temperatures—often exceeding 1,000°F—without compromising performance or safety. These units are typically built with specialized materials, thermal isolation, and cooling features to withstand extreme conditions in applications like furnaces, kilns, ovens, and incinerators.

What temperature ranges can IGE high-temp fans handle?

Our high temp fans are rated for continuous duty at up to 2,250°F and offer both air cooling and water cooling options. We have both standard designs and custom equipment optimized for your application.

How do I know if I need a high-temperature fan?

It depends on your application. Here’s a quick guide to different fan types and how they perform in high-temp environments:

Fan Type Ideal For Common Industries & Applications

What industries rely on high-temperature fans and blowers?

These systems are critical in industries where heat or challenging air handling is part of the process, including:

Do you offer custom-engineered high-temp fans to replace existing installed equipment? What about for new applications?

Yes. We regularly engineer interchange replacements for outdated fan units that benefit from IGE’s newest design architecture and seal technologies. Our application engineering team can also work with you to design custom fan units leveraging standard unit architectures & designs refined over the last century. Our engineering team can tailor a solution to match your airflow, temperature, and pressure requirements—even for niche or legacy systems.

What is your typical lead time for high-temp equipment?

Standard lead times of 6 weeks. Need it sooner? Let us know—expedited options are often available.

Can high-temp fans or blowers be repaired instead of replaced?

In many cases, yes. IGE offers repair and rebuild services that can extend the life of high-temperature equipment at a fraction of the replacement cost. We inspect wear, replace critical components, and re-balance the unit for safe operation. IGE’s application engineering team will suggest design tweaks to implement in the rebuilt unit to improve performance and reliability without increasing cost.

My process fan or blower is vibrating excessively, can IGE balance my fan unit?

Yes. IGE offers balancing services that can get your operation back on track. Our balancing standards exceed industry standards and involve both static balancing and dynamic 2-plane balancing of equipment. IGE balancing delivers smoother running equipment to maximize service life and uptime - no field balancing required.

What are some signs my high-temp fan needs attention?

Common warning signs include:

  • Unusual noise or vibration
  • Decreased airflow or pressure
  • Worsening temperature uniformity
  • Visible damage to housing or impellers
  • Frequent motor or bearing failure
If you’re experiencing any of the above, schedule an inspection with our service team.
