What is Nitriding?

Nitriding is a heat-treating process that aims to harden the surface of steel by introducing nitrogen into the surface layer. Nitriding enhances surface hardness, wear resistance, and fatigue strength. Low-carbon steel alloys are commonly case hardened via nitriding, but the process also translates well to aluminum, titanium, and other more exotic alloys for high performance applications. This makes nitriding a common process in the aerospace & defense and automotive industries for parts like bearings, valves, nozzles, cylinder liners, etc.

There are many nitriding processes including: gas nitriding, salt nitriding, and plasma nitriding.

Given high temperatures, typically 885-1150°F (475-620°C), and highly toxic, flammable process gases (e.g., ammonia), high-quality, well-engineered atmosphere-moving equipment is critical. At best, incorrect or lower quality equipment will lead to inconsistent process conditions, low energy efficiency, and elevated maintenance costs. At worst, such equipment can create real safety issues for your team and generate excessive quality waste & asset downtime.

Nitriding is similar to Carburizing in that it’s a surface-hardening heat-treating process but differs in that case depths are usually shallower and quenching is often unnecessary. There are also hybrid processes, carbonitriding and nitrocarburizing, that can yield unique material characteristics.
