Challenge

A Taiwan-based metal heat treating furnace OEM was contracted to design and build a very large aluminum homogenizing furnace capable of processing oversized ingots and billets for an end user in the Asia-Pacific region. The application presented a significant airflow engineering challenge: the furnace required precise temperature uniformity and aggressive cycle time targets at extreme operating conditions - continuous high-temperature service up to 1,200°F - at a scale well beyond standard off-the-shelf fan solutions. The OEM needed an application engineering partner who could work through the fan and airflow design requirements from the ground up and deliver a solution that could actually be built and trusted to perform in a demanding industrial environment.

Results

IGE's application engineering team collaborated directly with the furnace OEM's team to evaluate fan design and airflow options against the furnace's temperature uniformity and cycle time requirements. The analysis led to the selection of the IGE XP-07-73, a 10-foot-tall high-temperature axial plug fan with a 73" diameter fan wheel driven by a 125HP motor, rated for continuous operation at 1,200°F. The selected configuration delivers more than 168,000 CFM at 3" static pressure, providing the airflow volume and pressure characteristics required to achieve uniform heat distribution across the oversized billet load. The unit was engineered, built, and shipped from IGE's Westmont, IL facility.
